Gateway Student Earns Second Place at National FBLA Conference

Jennifer Li, a senior at Gateway High School in Monroeville, earned second place in Economics at the 2007 Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference in Chicago, June 28 – July 1.
Ms. Li earned the right to compete nationally after winning first place in the Pennsylvania competition held at Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in April.
Competing in FBLA’s national awards program, she vied for top honors in the Economics category against representatives from across the United States.
“I was very excited about representing my school in this competition,” said Ms. Li. “These events offer an opportunity to meet so many diverse people from all across the country.”
Ms. Li became interested in the subject by taking an Economics course from Gateway teacher, Mark Wallace this year.
“Mr. Wallace is a fantastic teacher, so I was well prepared,” she commented. She said the FBLA exam measured knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomics as well as the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services in society.
The competition is part of an annual program sponsored annually by FBLA and Phi Beta Lambda, an association for students pursing business and business-related careers. Individuals, local chapters, and state teams compete in over 55 events representing a range of leading edge business, career, and leadership development activities.
“She studied on the bus ride there and in the hotel after we checked in," said teacher and adviser, Andrea Campbell. "She is so conscientious and also a very well-rounded student. It will be my pleasure to accompany her to the National FBLA Conference in Chicago."
Ms. Li plans on attending the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia to study Pre-med in the fall.

Induction expands National Honor Society ranks

Forty Gateway High School students were inducted into National Honor Society.

Students received induction certificates at the induction ceremony.
Afterward, they attended a congratulatory reception with their fellow inductees, parents and administrators.
Dr. Maria Simbra, medical correspondent with KDKA-TV, was the guest speaker.
National Honor Society membership is a form of recognition for scholarship, leadership, service and character.
Criteria for induction at Gateway High School include a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher and leadership and community service experience.
National Honor Society members volunteer for a year-long program in which they serve as tutors for underclassmen struggling with academic subjects.
