GHS Gifted Students Win Many Times at Linguishtiks Competition


The Gateway High School AIM students recently competed in a Linguishtiks Competition at Hempfield High School. (Linguishtiks is a competition involving knowledge in grammar, words, and vocabulary.) Gateway had three teams of five students competing in the twelve-team competition. Gateway earned first place, third place and fourth place in the competition.First place team members included: Matthew Lambert, Yatindra Patel, Sara Stanutz, Travis Creighton, and Kunal Shah. Third place team members included: Hayley Fedorek, Natalie Giannangeli, Kelly McMasters, Sara O'Toole, and Cameron Meindl. The fourth place team members included: Sandesh Raj, Olivia Ren, Marissa Gogniat, Kate Lenart, and Natalie Mangene. Matthew Lambert earned first place individual, Hayley Fedorek earned third place individual, and Yatindra Patel earned fourth place individual. Faculty sponsors for the event were Jim Pottinger and Lynn Martin.

GHS AIM Students Take Second in Regional ESSPA Geog. Bowl


Five students from Gateway High School’s AIM program competed against 12 other teams in the ESSPA Geography Bowl and earned second place.The ESSPA Geography Bowl measures the student’s knowledge of the geography of various continents with questions related to such items as land forms, water, people, capitals, cities, ports, islands, climate, raw materials, products, languages, etc. Each year, one area of the world is selected for the competition. This year the area was Central and South America. After five rounds of competition, Gateway’s team finished in the number two spot. The team was made up of Eric Pelkey, Will Randall, Kristofer Pomiecko, Vivek Rajkumar, and Awaiz Khan. Eric Pelkey captured the second best individual score and Achal Channarasappa captured the fourth best individual score. Faculty sponsors for the event were Jim Pottinger and Lynn Martin.

Several students at Gateway High School were named winners at the FBLA Regional Competition recently conducted at St. Vincent College. There were 12 local schools in attendance. Franks, Kim, S. Patel, Garofolo, Kelly, Knan, R. Patel, Stasa, Phillips, Y. Patel, Clinton, Hinkes, and Parker are now eligible to compete at the FBLA State Competition at Hershey in April. Faculty Advisor for FBLA is Andrea Campbell.

GHS Sophmore Julia Leix Skates to US Figure Skating Championships

I don't usually report on sports much here, but this one caught my eye. Julia Leix is a sophmore at Gateway High School, who recently placed 4th in the U.S. Pacific Coast Sectional Championships for figure skating, held in Arizona. She and her ice dancing partner now advance to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, held in Cleveland, Ohio.
