River City Brass Band to play at Gateway 12/8

Dec.4: Scenes from the Arts-burgh
By staff and wire reportsTuesday, December 4, 2007

Offerings from Pittsburgh's cultural arts and entertainment events:
River City Brass Band
More than 300 voices from four high school choirs gave the River City Brass Band a high-powered opening for its holiday concerts Thursday at Heinz Hall, Downtown.
Even though the choral component will be smaller in subsequent concerts, the shows have enough winning elements to make them stand out.
They contain two world premieres, including a wonderful "Festival Fanfare for Christmas" by John Wasson from Dallas. That piece is greatly satisfying in its performance challenges and its presentation of Christmas songs in a fanfare setting.
Trumpeter David Gedris' lower-brass arrangement of Franz Bieble's "Ave Maria" also claims a winning spot in the show, along with an arrangement of "Jingle Bells" featuring principal tuba Carson McTeer.
The variety of works pulls these concerts away from the holiday cliches.
The concert will be repeated at 8 p.m. Thursday at Gateway High School, 3000 Gateway Campus Blvd., Monroeville

Gateway High School Holds 50th School Year Celebration & Community Open House

Gateway School District held a 50th school year homecoming celebration, rededication and community open house during the 2007 homecoming weekend. During the event, the District rededicated the renovated high school and provided visitors an opportunity to view the most recent school additions and renovations. In 1955, the schools of Monroeville and Pitcairn joined to form the Monroeville-Pitcairn Joint School District. That same year, the Board of School Directors began making plans for a new senior high school. Official planning and architectural design began in February 1956 with a ground breaking held in January of 1957. The joint School Board selected the name of Gateway Senior High School and by September 1958, 900 students from Monroeville and Pitcairn were occupying the new high school. The first graduating class of 196 students received their diplomas in June of 1959.
This year, when over 1,500 students walked through the doors on the first day of school, Gateway High School began its 50th year of educating students. In June, the Class of 2008 will become the 50th class to graduate from Gateway High School.

Moss Side Middle School Students Join Global Exercise Effort

http://www.gatewayk12.org
Over 600 students, faculty, and staff at Moss Side Middle School danced non-stop for 30 minutes in May as part of Project ACES, a global initiative to turn kids on to exercise.
Labeled as “the world’s largest exercise class” millions of children from all over the world will exercise together simultaneously to promote proper health and fitness habits.
With the obesity epidemic facing the youth of the world, children’s fitness plays a major role in fighting heart disease and other illnesses. ACES stands for All Children Exercise Simultaneously.
The event typically takes place on the first Wednesday in May as part of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month along with National Physical Education Week.
ACES grew out of a 1989 letter-writing campaign by Len Saunders, a New Jersey physical education teacher, proposing that students in at least one school in every state start exercising at the same moment. This year, millions of students in all 50 states, as well as over 50 countries, participated in the event.
The Project is supported by The President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports (PCPFS), and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance(AAHPERD).

Gateway Student Earns Second Place at National FBLA Conference

http://www.gatewayk12.org
Jennifer Li, a senior at Gateway High School in Monroeville, earned second place in Economics at the 2007 Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference in Chicago, June 28 – July 1.
Ms. Li earned the right to compete nationally after winning first place in the Pennsylvania competition held at Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in April.
Competing in FBLA’s national awards program, she vied for top honors in the Economics category against representatives from across the United States.
“I was very excited about representing my school in this competition,” said Ms. Li. “These events offer an opportunity to meet so many diverse people from all across the country.”
Ms. Li became interested in the subject by taking an Economics course from Gateway teacher, Mark Wallace this year.
“Mr. Wallace is a fantastic teacher, so I was well prepared,” she commented. She said the FBLA exam measured knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomics as well as the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services in society.
The competition is part of an annual program sponsored annually by FBLA and Phi Beta Lambda, an association for students pursing business and business-related careers. Individuals, local chapters, and state teams compete in over 55 events representing a range of leading edge business, career, and leadership development activities.
“She studied on the bus ride there and in the hotel after we checked in," said teacher and adviser, Andrea Campbell. "She is so conscientious and also a very well-rounded student. It will be my pleasure to accompany her to the National FBLA Conference in Chicago."
Ms. Li plans on attending the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia to study Pre-med in the fall.
