River City Brass Band to play at Gateway 12/8

Dec.4: Scenes from the Arts-burgh
By staff and wire reportsTuesday, December 4, 2007

Offerings from Pittsburgh's cultural arts and entertainment events:
River City Brass Band
More than 300 voices from four high school choirs gave the River City Brass Band a high-powered opening for its holiday concerts Thursday at Heinz Hall, Downtown.
Even though the choral component will be smaller in subsequent concerts, the shows have enough winning elements to make them stand out.
They contain two world premieres, including a wonderful "Festival Fanfare for Christmas" by John Wasson from Dallas. That piece is greatly satisfying in its performance challenges and its presentation of Christmas songs in a fanfare setting.
Trumpeter David Gedris' lower-brass arrangement of Franz Bieble's "Ave Maria" also claims a winning spot in the show, along with an arrangement of "Jingle Bells" featuring principal tuba Carson McTeer.
The variety of works pulls these concerts away from the holiday cliches.
The concert will be repeated at 8 p.m. Thursday at Gateway High School, 3000 Gateway Campus Blvd., Monroeville
